The Prof is in...Emanuelle Caplette

Posted by Gareth Makin on

Ms.Caplette can’t seem to get her words out today.  She informs us that she’s picked up a bad throat infection (hence the whisper), but she’s still smiling and it’s not going to stop her playing some drums too.  The audience don’t seem to mind at all (the large auditorium is just over half capacity for this multi-clinic show) filled as it is with drum enthusiasts (you know the ones that actually attend shows) eager to see her play.  She doesn’t make it over to the UK much (and definitely not to Manchester where we’re all sat now, at the inaugural...

The Prof is in...Zoro

If there was one drummer responsible for schooling the rest of us in the history of the funk, it may well be Zoro.  He wears a hat, is always impeccably turned out and has such a smooth groove, L’Oreal would do well to bottle it. He is an ordained minister, motivational speaker and all around good guy.  He even finds the time to put out fabulous educational books and DVD’s too (‘The Commandments of R&B Drumming’ – Alfred Publishing).  He’s played with a plethora of artists from the old school (note the spelling young people) R&B of Frankie Valli (go...

The Prof is in, Todd Sucherman

Posted by Gareth Makin on

I met Todd Sucherman a few years back when he did a clinic at a local drumstore I worked for at the time.  I will say first that I loved his playing (before I met him) and his kit too.  Now, I'm not a real lover of large drum sets (having owned some and well, basically been lost behind them - the dreaded Cul-de-Sac (an English term for a short street that bends back on itself and doesn't go anywhere) fill appeared more than once at gigs) probably due to the gigs I do/did rather than an objection to them...

The Prof is in. Virgil Donati

An article in the July edition of DRUM magazine has prompted this weeks 'Cymbals of the Greats' blog as it reminded me of the first time I saw this drummer perform. It was on one of Virgil's first visits to the UK when he was endorsing Premier drums (that night he was playing their birch 'Genista' model - he's now with dw) and the clinic tour (which he was sharing with pipe band legend Jim Kilpatrick and then 'Take That' drummer Steve Washington) called at my home town of Warrington (UK). Jim Kilpatrick opened the show and admirably demonstrated why...

The Prof is in. Mark Guiliana.

Posted by Gareth Makin on

Welcome to a new blog on Cymbomute.com where I'll be looking at some of the drummers that turn heads and push musical boundaries.  They either inspire (hopefully) or just make life difficult for the rest of us (more likely).  We could be talking technique or touch here, or just that slightly out of reach 'to die for' ride cymbal sound! First up to the plate is New Jersey native Mark Guiliana.  For those who have (so far) missed out, check out some clips on Youtube.  You could go for his launch videos for the Gretsch Broadkaster reboot, or his duo...
